"Things change," he said as he lay in his hospice bed with us standing beside him with tears in our eyes. As he looked at us there was a smile on his face, he wanted us to accept the changes ahead and move forward. As people we are aware of things changing around us, the seasons, our age, our society, and our everyday routines. But sometimes big events come about that we don't expect, that we're not prepared for. When these events happen, it makes the small, mundane moments and objects of our lives hold more importance.
A big change occurred in my life in December 2014. My grandfather, the backbone of our family, lost his third battle with cancer. When he got sick for the third time I began photographing those parts of life that would normally go unnoticed. After his passing my grandmother and I began watching our family's home movies that included the earlier years of his cancer. These photographs, along with home movie stills are my way of dealing with the fact that things change.
